AAGL Endometriosis/Reproductive Surgery SIG Webinar:

Webinar Topic: Deep Dive into Diaphragmatic Endometriosis: Evaluation, Planning, and Surgical Strategy

Presented by:

Ricardo M. A. Pereira, MD, Center for Endometriosis and Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at Santa Joana Hospital and Maternity, São Paulo, Brazil
Topic Title: Diaphragmatic Endometriosis Including the Pericardium: Diagnosis and Surgical Approach

Moderated by:

Ted Lee, MD and Victoria Vargas, MD, MS

Webinar Description: Diaphragmatic endometriosis represents one of the most complex and least standardized manifestations of endometriosis, requiring meticulous preoperative evaluation, thoughtful surgical planning, and advanced laparoscopic expertise. This one-hour, case-based webinar offers an in-depth exploration of the diagnosis and surgical management of diaphragmatic endometriosis, led by internationally recognized endometriosis surgeon Dr. Ricardo Pereira and moderated by Drs. Ted Lee and Victoria Vargas.

Dr. Pereira will provide a comprehensive review of preoperative assessment, including symptomatology, imaging considerations, and multidisciplinary planning. The session will address surgical consent, with particular emphasis on counseling patients regarding intraoperative findings, extent of resection, and potential thoracic involvement. Technical aspects of surgery will be discussed in detail, including port placement strategies, ergonomics of the laparoscopic approach, and methods to optimize surgeon efficiency and safety during prolonged, complex procedures.

The webinar will also cover intraoperative decision-making based on the extent and location of diaphragmatic disease, including superficial versus full-thickness involvement, anterior versus posterior diaphragm considerations, and coordination with thoracic surgery when indicated. Practical pearls and pitfalls will be highlighted to help surgeons refine their approach and improve outcomes in this challenging subset of endometriosis.

Webinar Course Objective(s):
1. Apply a systematic, evidence-informed approach to the preoperative evaluation and surgical planning of diaphragmatic endometriosis
2. Integrate anatomic location and extent of disease into safe, effective laparoscopic surgical strategies for diaphragmatic endometriosis
3. Implement ergonomic and port placement principles to optimize surgical performance and patient outcomes in complex
endometriosis surgery
